What is a Cistern?
A toilet uses a cistern to hold the right amount of water needed to flush the toilet bowl. In older style toilets the cistern was located high above the toilet bowl and connected by a long pipe. You would then pull a hanging chain to flush the toilet. Toilets today are usually installed back to wall or wall hung. The cistern is then directly mounted on the toilet bowl.

Another option is where the cistern is built into the wall behind the toilet. These are known as concealed cistern toilets, although this type of cistern is becoming less common.
